PVC Foam Board for Bathroom Cabinets: Test the Assembly First
A bathroom cabinet can look convincing in a material catalogue. The surface is clean, the colour works, and the board is described as water-resistant. Then comes the workshop: hinge cups, screw holes, plumbing cut-outs and a shelf expected to carry cleaning supplies for years.
That is where material selection becomes more specific.
For buyers considering PVC foam board for bathroom cabinets, our advice is to build one representative assembly before approving a bulk order. A neat sample square is useful for checking colour and surface finish. It cannot tell you how a door will hang.
Start with the part that carries the hardware
Take the hinge fixing first. Use the hinge, screws and drilling setup intended for production, on a sample of the proposed board grade and thickness.
Record the screw diameter, engagement depth, pilot-hole preparation and driver setting. Keep those details unchanged when comparing samples. Otherwise, a difference in assembly can easily be mistaken for a difference in board quality.
Check both the initial fixing and the joint after repeated door operation. Look for movement around the hinge plate, local crushing or a screw that no longer tightens properly. If the cabinet will be supplied flat-packed, include a trial of the actual customer assembly process.
A screw that feels tight on the first turn is only an initial observation. For a production decision, ask the supplier what screw-retention data is available and how the test was performed. Board-face and board-edge results should be identified separately.
There is little value in comparing two pull-out figures if the fasteners or test conditions differ.
Give the shelf a proper trial
A short offcut held in your hands does not represent a full-width shelf.
Build the proposed shelf at its intended span, with the actual supports. Apply a representative service load and agree on an observation period and acceptable deflection before the trial. Record the conditions so the result can be repeated.
Treat this as a development check; it does not replace any furniture testing required for the finished product.
If the shelf does not meet the requirement, discuss the board specification and the support arrangement together. Changing thickness may be one option. Reducing the unsupported span or revising the construction may be another. The sample should help you make that decision before panels are cut for a whole order.
The same thinking applies to a wall-hung vanity. Its mounting arrangement needs assessment as part of the complete cabinet.
Approve the finish on a fabricated part
If you plan to laminate the PVC foam board, send the supplier details of the decorative material, adhesive and pressing process.

Make a finished trial piece with an edge, a drilled hole and a cut-out. Examine adhesion, flatness and the appearance around those details after the process has settled.
For bathroom use, agree on an appropriate moisture-exposure check for the assembly. Include the finish and joints in that assessment. Choosing a moisture-resistant substrate still leaves the cabinet maker with decisions about adhesives, hardware and construction.
Turn the approved sample into an order specification
Once the trial works, save more than a photograph.
Keep an identified reference sample and record the board grade, thickness tolerance, surface requirements and approved fabrication details. For incoming inspection, agree which characteristics will be checked and how samples will be selected.
The purchasing specification should also identify the part being made. “White PVC foam board for furniture” leaves room for interpretation. “Board for the side panel of this bathroom cabinet, using this hinge arrangement” gives a manufacturer something concrete to review.
Density can be included in the specification, but an agreed density number alone does not describe the finished assembly.
